I fish the breakwater in Two Harbors aggressively thru the summer month. It's the only place where really deep water is accessible without a boat. These trout like hard baits, flash baits and just about everything a person can attempt to feed them as long as the lure gets down deep where the fish are....like 85 feet.
Knowing that jigging these fish using the Exude tubes is a great method when in a boat over deep humps, I came up with a weighted insert employing a treble hook that gets these down fast and allows me to swim-jig the bait back to the breakwater. The darting swimming action is incredible and was more than this one could handle [one of four that fell victim to this tube rig in two days]. The smallest of the four fish taken using this rig was at 9 pounds even and the pictured fish rolled in at over 15.
Light line and long rods make for great distance casting and a bait can easily be pulled through 225 feet of water on a retrieve. This covers the entire water column's depths, but the bulk of hits can be expected from depths closer to the bottom.
This one was on the 6 pound fluorocarbon line for 22 minutes before coming to the net.
